Disease Areas
At BirchBioMed, we are dedicated to tackling some of the most challenging and debilitating conditions related to fibrosis and autoimmune disorders. Our primary focus includes the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Type 1 Diabetes and Alopecia Areata.
Topical Scarring & Burns
Scars (or fibrosis) are often the result of aberrant tissue repair processes. Fibrosis occurs when normal tissue repair pathways become dysregulated, causing excessive collagen and fibronectin deposition in wounds and affected organs that ultimately impairs their physiological function. More than 100 million patients develop scars each year as a result of 55 million elective operations and 25 million operations after trauma in the developed world alone. Excessive scars form as a result of aberrations of physiologic wound healing and may develop following any insult to the deep dermis, including burn injury, lacerations, abrasions, surgery, piercings and vaccinations.
Organ Fibrosis
Organ fibrosis is a pathological process characterized by the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, leading to the scarring and hardening of tissues. This condition can affect various organs, including the liver, lungs, kidneys, and heart, and is often the result of chronic inflammation or injury. In the developed world, organ fibrosis is a significant health concern, contributing to nearly 45% of all deaths due to its association with chronic diseases such as liver cirrhosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and chronic kidney disease.
Autoimmune Disorders
Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system, which typically protects the body from harmful invaders, mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells and tissues. This misdirected immune response is often triggered by a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Autoimmune diseases can target various organs and systems, leading to a wide range of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Type 1 Diabetes and Alopecia Areata.
Wrinkles & Rhytids
Wrinkles and rhytids, commonly known as facial lines, are natural skin changes that occur as part of the aging process, reflecting a decrease in the skin’s elasticity and volume. These skin alterations are primarily due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers, dehydration, and the cumulative effects of sun exposure and environmental stressors.
